A Series of Machines That Kill You - Grant Howitt's RPGs (by Grant Howitt)
by Grant Howitt
(Friday/Saturday morning)
Grant Howitt (me) is one of the most prolific RPG designers active today, and his (my) work has been played by thousands of people worldwide. (Apparently.)
This presentation takes an in-depth look at his work, all the way from his early experiments into live-action games to his upcoming work Hollows, and asks:
- Why do criminal animals feature so heavily in his work when he himself is neither?
- Is his obsession with anti-canon a facet of his self-loathing or mere laziness?
- Is Spire: the City Must Fall a direct response to Brexit?
- Why does he keep writing games where the player characters are supposed to die?
- Is he, you know, okay?
All these questions and more will be answered (probably) in this retrospective talk (that I was asked to deliver by the organisers) by an authority on the subject (me).
