The Worst Day of Your Life (So Far): Stress in Spire and Heart

Most roleplaying games feature mechanics for inflicting misfortune on the player characters. But what if you wrote a system built around the most interesting thing that could go wrong?
In Spire and Heart, we developed the Resistance System which (we hope) answers that question. Hit points, debt, mental health, public opinion and the actions of your enemies are all tracked in the same way. The highlight of these games is seeing how player characters overcome the difficulties placed upon them thanks to their actions.
During this talk I'll be exploring the design decisions that led us to make this game, discussing alternate (failed) systems we tried for a while, and outlining how tackling misfortune can be one of the most engaging and exciting methods of play.
